A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture in southwestern Japan on Tuesday, killing at least 14 people and trapping others when a shopping mall's second floor collapsed following an explosion. Rescue teams continue searching for survivors amid reports of a gas leak, while nearly 10,000 people remain in emergency shelters and tens of thousands more are without power. The quake, stronger than one that killed over 270 people in the region in 2016, has also damaged a 17th-century castle and suspended train and flight services. Around 300,000 residents have been told to evacuate, with officials warning of continued aftershock risks. Al Jazeera's Jack Barton reports. Subscribe to our channel: bit.ly
