Puerto Rico Rations Water for 48 Hours at a Time Amid Extreme Drought

08/08/2026-01:40 08/08/2026-02:00 חדשות قناة Al Jazeera דיווח

Puerto Rico is desperate for water again. Extreme drought has forced the government to ration water on a rotating 48-hour schedule, affecting more than 180,000 people. San Juan has recorded its driest July in over 120 years, and reservoir levels are running critically low. Governor Jenniffer Gonzalez has activated the National Guard to help distribute water after a major line was damaged, though she says she doesn't know when the rationing will end. It's the third time in about a decade the U.S. territory has had to ration water, with recovery from past hurricanes and delayed federal infrastructure funding compounding the crisis. On an island where 40% of the population lives in poverty, access to water is becoming increasingly scarce. Al Jazeera's Matthew Torres reports from San Juan. Subscribe to our channel: bit.ly
