Trump says US ‘low-keying it’ with Iran as Tehran firm on Hormuz conditions

US President Donald Trump says he will allow economic pressure to continue piling on Iran, telling US news site Axios: “We are low-keying it. We’re only semi-negotiating with them.” The US is maintaining its naval blockade on Iranian ports, using US Navy vessels to turn back ships destined for or travelling from Iran. Trump says the blockade is vital to weakening Iran’s economy. Iran has set its own conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, including the withdrawal of US forces from the region and compensation for damage caused by the war. Al Jazeera correspondent Rosiland Jordan says the language from the Trump administration has “changed in the past week”, with Trump moving away from threats of a “massive military strike” and saying the US is prepared to “wait things out”. She notes that the shift comes as polls show a “strong majority of Americans” oppose both the decision to go to war with Iran and its continuation, while the conflict’s economic impact could also affect congressional Republicans ahead of the midterm elections.
