Sudan Blackout: Khartoum Businesses Struggle in Two-Week Power Cut

12/08/2026-19:11 12/08/2026-19:15 חדשות قناة Al Jazeera דיווח

In Khartoum, supermarket owner Ahmed Yaqoub checks his generator several times a day, spending around $500 on fuel daily to keep fridges and freezers running. Authorities blame the nationwide blackout on damage to the Merowe Hydroelectric station, which supplies more than half of Sudan’s power and has been repeatedly targeted since 2023. Even before the war, some districts faced eight-hour cuts. Now, with an estimated 3,000 megawatt shortage, many Sudanese simply cannot afford generators or solar power.
