Israel has ‘outsourced coercion’ to settlers in occupied West Bank: Francesca Albanese

Several countries, including the UK, Australia, Canada, France, New Zealand and Norway, have imposed sanctions targeting Israeli networks involved in financing, enabling and carrying out settler violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. A UN inquiry has found that Israeli soldiers often accompany settlers and provide protection as they attack Palestinians. In an interview with Al Jazeera, UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese said the Israeli state “bears responsibility” and has “outsourced coercion to settlers.” She said: “We should stop talking about settler violence, by the way, because this is utter terrorism.” Albanese said Israel is “advancing, violently, the ethnic cleansing of Palestine through the settlers” and that the international community is “letting it happen.” She criticised European Union states including Italy and Germany for maintaining close ties with Israel, and accused the US of “bullying into compliance” anyone seeking accountability.
