Thousands mourn Jason Arday in London, blaming ‘racist’ press for his death

18/08/2026-07:31 18/08/2026-07:40 חדשות قناة Al Jazeera דיווח

Tens of thousands of mourners gathered in London to remember former Cambridge professor Jason Arday, whose supporters are demanding an inquiry into what they describe as a racist campaign against him. Arday, who became Cambridge's youngest Black professor in 2023, resigned on August 5 amid scrutiny over allegations of plagiarism and other claims. He denied the accusations but acknowledged making errors, while an investigation into his doctoral thesis at Liverpool John Moores University did not uphold a plagiarism complaint. Cambridge later opened an independent investigation into his appointment and academic work. Arday was found dead at his home nine days after resigning, with police saying his death was unexpected but not suspicious. His supporters say he faced sustained abuse and misinformation but claims that racism or media coverage contributed to his death have not been officially established.
