Why recent major quakes don’t mean the planet is shaking more

Recent magnitude 7 and above earthquakes in Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Japan, the Philippines and Indonesia have killed and injured thousands, prompting concern that the world is shaking more. But US Geological Survey data show temporary rises and falls are normal, with an average of about 133 quakes above magnitude 6 per year. Fatality levels depend on factors like location, building standards and wealth, especially along fault lines and the Pacific Ring of Fire, which produces 90% of global quakes.
