Syria detains policeman over death of former White Helmets rescuer in custody

An investigation into the death of former White Helmets volunteer Mohammad Ghamira in police custody in Syria has found no evidence of deliberate physical abuse, officials say. Ghamira, who had haemophilia, died from a brain haemorrhage after being detained in al-Haffah over a financial dispute. Witnesses told investigators that a police officer slapped him despite authorities being warned about his condition. The officer has been detained and referred for prosecution. Ghamira's death has sparked anger and protests, reviving painful memories of torture and abuse in detention under the Assad regime. Rights groups say they have received testimony of other cases of alleged abuse and deaths in custody, while Syria's Interior Ministry says it is restructuring its security forces and strengthening human rights training.
