US tariffs on Canada put jobs and trade at risk

22/08/2026-18:17 22/08/2026-18:30 חדשות قناة Al Jazeera דיווח

The US is imposing 50 percent tariffs on some Canadian imports, targeting about $20 billion worth of goods including alcohol, dairy, furniture, cement, clothing and hockey equipment. The two economies are deeply linked, with roughly $880 billion in goods and services traded last year. About 72 percent of Canada’s merchandise exports go to the US. The tariffs could raise prices for US consumers and put pressure on Canadian producers as businesses absorb higher costs or face reduced demand. The impact could also extend to energy, manufacturing and other industries that depend on access to the US market. If trade slows, companies could cut production, postpone investment or reduce hiring, putting jobs at risk. Al Jazeera’s Dalya Al Masri reports. Subscribe to our channel: bit.ly
