Khamenei's call for Gulf unity rings hollow, says analyst: Analysis

30/08/2026-21:30 30/08/2026-21:50 חדשות قناة Al Jazeera דיווח

Tim Constantine, senior writer at the Washington Times, joins Al Jazeera in Doha to react to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei calling on Gulf nations to unite against the "enemies of Islam." Constantine calls the appeal hollow given Iran has struck a Qatari gas refinery, a UAE hotel and an Omani cargo facility in recent months, while pressuring the UAE economically. He argues that the simplest way for Iran to show good faith would be to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which would hurt regional economies far more than the US. He compares US strategy to a boxing match, with military strikes, which Iran says caused $200 to $300 billion in damage, as body blows meant to soften Iran, followed now by economic pressure aimed at choking off government revenue, with the military option still not off the table.
