Iceland votes no to reopening EU membership talks

After a night of vote counting, Iceland has said "nei takk," no thank you, to relaunching EU membership talks, with the no camp taking 52.8 percent in referendum polls that had shown it as a toss-up. Prime Minister Kristrun Frostadottir, whose coalition championed the vote, denies it's a setback, calling it "a victory for democracy" for fulfilling a campaign promise to put the question to the public. A yes vote wouldn't have meant automatic membership, only a chance for Reykjavik and Brussels to discuss terms ahead of a further referendum, but even the hint of talks over Iceland's prized fisheries proved unacceptable to many voters.
