US economic pressure will not force Iran to change its behaviour: Joey Hood

01/09/2026-03:19 01/09/2026-03:40 חדשות قناة Al Jazeera דיווח

The Trump administration is ramping up economic pressure on Iran while threatening military strikes. In an interview with Al Jazeera, former US ambassador Joey Hood said President Trump has "clearly understood the limits" of military strikes but warned that Iran is "not going to suddenly change its behaviour" in response to sanctions. He noted that it took two years of sanctions to bring Iran to the negotiating table for the 2015 nuclear deal, but that China and Russia are not "fully on board" now, and Iran knows the president is "after regime change", making a similar outcome unlikely. Hood said he does not see a diplomatic off-ramp under Trump, but suggested a future US president could offer one. He proposed an "Islamic naval coalition led by Pakistan, Turkey" to monitor the Strait of Hormuz and allow both sides to back away from the conflict while saving face.
