Nepal rescue teams race to reach possible survivors trapped in hydropower tunnels

Rescue teams in northern Nepal are continuing a difficult search for survivors at the Chilime hydropower plant, more than a week after devastating floods swept through the region. The Nepalese Army is flying helicopters in and out of a small landing strip every few minutes to bring in personnel and equipment, but the operation remains extremely dangerous because much of the riverbank and surrounding infrastructure was washed away. Rescue teams are also working to establish land access from both sides of the river so heavy equipment can be brought closer to the site. Despite the difficult terrain and poor weather, rescuers believe there could still be survivors inside the hydropower tunnels and are continuing efforts to reach them. The search comes after two workers were rescued alive from another hydropower tunnel in Rasuwa nine days after the floods, raising hopes for further survivors.
