Iran's Hormuz plan is not a real opening, analyst warns: Analysis

Thomas Warrick, a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council and former US deputy assistant secretary for counterterrorism, says Iran's seven-day plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz is not a genuine diplomatic opening. He says it would require Washington to give up leverage, such as frozen assets and sanctions, without assurance Iran shares the same understanding of what reopening the strait actually means, given deep mistrust after Iranian forces fired on tankers weeks after a favourable June agreement. Warrick says little has changed since then: Washington still expects Iran to fully open the strait to international shipping, something Tehran has not indicated it will do.
