What does it take to turn a handful of trees from your own backyard into a building you can actually use? Sam Macy sets out to answer that question by constructing a small barn from the ground up, beginning with the trees themselves and working through every structural decision by hand. Instead of relying on a conventional kit or a ready-made frame, he uses locally harvested logs as the backbone of the build, combining traditional roundwood construction with modern materials and techniques. But raising a barn from raw timber means solving one problem after another: irregular logs have to become a precise structural frame, the building has to survive changing seasons while still unfinished, and every new layer has to work with what came before it. As the project progresses, rough forestry, timber framing, carpentry and practical workshop design begin to converge into something far more ambitious than a simple backyard outbuilding.
