Paraguay has sworn in a new president after Santiago Pena was impeached and placed under house arrest. Celebrations followed outside Congress. The Senate voted to impeach Pena for failing to carry out his presidential responsibilities, after the Prosecutor for Economic and Corruption Crimes ordered that he be put under house arrest. Pena is allegedly embroiled in a financial scandal that led to the collapse of the country’s largest online bank, Ueno Bank, this week, leaving millions of depositors unable to access their savings. Also arrested was Carlos Carvallo, Central Bank president until he was forced to resign. He allegedly covered up serious financial irregularities at Ueno Bank, among other accusations. His replacement, former vice president Pedro Alliana, was sworn in quickly. He vowed to govern for the most disadvantaged and said citizens affected by the financial crisis “will be fully compensated”. Millions fear losing their savings. Al Jazeera’s Lucia Newman reports.
