Palestinian Authority faces financial crisis as Israel withholds billions in tax revenues

The Palestinian Authority is struggling to pay public sector salaries as Israel continues to withhold tax revenues it collects on the PA's behalf. Under the 1994 Paris Protocol, Israel became the tax collector for goods entering Palestinian territories but has frozen or deducted transfers since 2019. These revenues account for around 60 per cent of the PA's budget. Israel has withheld a total of $4.5bn, pushing the PA's debt to $15.6bn and forcing cuts to public services, including reduced school hours. Al Jazeera's Nida Ibrahim reports.
