US State Department deputy spokesperson: Iranian regime's actions prove nuclear threat

02/04/2026-20:55 02/04/2026-21:05 חדשות قناة Al Jazeera דיווח

Tommy Piggott, Principal Deputy Spokesperson at the US State Department, told Al Jazeera in an interview that President Trump's latest speech outlined clear objectives in the Iran war, centred on preventing Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon — an "intolerable threat to the United States and to the world". He confirmed that the conflict is expected to end in two to three weeks, citing the destruction of Iran's air force, navy, and missile capability already achieved or well underway. Piggott said Washington pursued diplomacy before and after military operations, including "Operation Midnight Hammer", but claimed Iran continued its nuclear ambitions. While declining to confirm any active talks, he insisted that diplomacy remains an option alongside military pressure. A 24-hour State Department task force has been established to assist US citizens amid evacuations across the Gulf region, with Piggott thanking regional allies for their support. He added that Washington is engaging regional partners to contain escalation, including developments in Lebanon and Yemen, pointing to the administration's "maximum pressure policy" including sanctions on terrorist proxies. He stressed the administration believes it is close to achieving its objectives, while warning of continued threats from Iran. Subscribe to our channel: bit.ly
