Greece explores nuclear power as energy security concerns grow

06/04/2026-15:55 06/04/2026-16:10 חדשות قناة Al Jazeera דיווח

Greece is reconsidering nuclear energy as it seeks stable, low-carbon power amid rising global energy insecurity. According to the International Energy Agency, nuclear accounted for just 9% of global electricity in 2023. Despite strong public scepticism, driven by memories of the Chernobyl disaster, attitudes are slowly shifting. The government says emerging small modular reactors could be a viable future option. Greece already generates more than half its electricity from renewables but still relies on gas for baseload power. Earthquake risks remain a concern, though advances in engineering and reactor design may mitigate them. As energy costs rise and demand grows, nuclear power is being reconsidered as part of Greece’s long-term strategy. Al Jazeera’s John Psaropoulos reports from Athens. Subscribe to our channel: bit.ly
