The contradictory demands to end the US-Israel war on Iran | This is America

In this episode of This is America, hosted by Anna Burns-Francis, Al Jazeera explores how the United States and Iran are locked in a high-stakes struggle over who gets to decide when – and how – the war ends, and what that means for control of the Strait of Hormuz and the wider Middle East. The programme traces President Donald Trump’s threats of “Power Plant Day” and “Bridge Day” strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure and bridges ahead of his Hormuz deadline, even as he insists the US is “in deep negotiations” and claims he will know the war is over only when he feels it “in [his] bones.” We break down Washington’s sweeping 15-point plan – demanding that Iran permanently halt uranium enrichment, dismantle key nuclear facilities, hand over enriched stockpiles, curb its missile programme and end support for regional proxies – and contrast it with Tehran’s counterdemands for war reparations, full sovereign control of the Strait of Hormuz, binding US security guarantees and a halt to attacks on its allies. The programme also examines Iran’s newly floated condition that a share of transit revenues through the strait be earmarked to compensate for war damage, even as Tehran expands the conflict through joint operations with Hezbollah in Lebanon, allied armed groups in Iraq and Yemen’s Houthi rebels. With thousands of US marines deploying to the region, we assess whether a unilateral US ceasefire could ever reopen the strait or instead draw Washington into a deeper, more dangerous ground war. Al Jazeera’s White House Correspondent Kimberly Halkett and State Department Correspondent Manny Rapalo report from Washington on the growing risk that, without meaningful concessions on both sides, the deadlock over ending the war and reopening Hormuz will persist, driving up global energy prices and testing America’s role as security guarantor for the Gulf. Former US Middle East envoy Dennis Ross and former senior US diplomat Alan Ayre join us in studio to analyse how much leverage each side really has, whether a coalition led by Egypt, Pakistan and Turkey can bridge the gap between US and Iranian demands, and if a sustainable ceasefire is possible before the conflict hardens into a long war of attrition.
