US-Iran ceasefire ended ‘long before’ Iran attacked US warship, analyst says

Asked whether the Iranian announcement of an attack on a US warship in the Strait of Hormuz means the end of the US-Iran ceasefire, analyst Foad Izadi says the truce ended much earlier. “The ceasefire started on April 7 and ended on April 8 when the United States blockaded Iranian ports. Under international law and under the US law, blockades are acts of war,” Izadi, a professor at the University of Tehran, told Al Jazeera. It is difficult to know what posture the US will adopt towards Iran until and unless we get confirmation that one of its ships has been hit, says Alexandru Hudisteanu, a military and diplomatic analyst. After all, “if a ship has been hit, this is not something you can easily hide and so most likely, [the US] will release a communique” stating whether the ship has been hit, Hudisteanu told Al Jazeera. It is also important to bear in mind the two sides remain at war, he said. For Iran, the Strait of Hormuz is the “only leverage” it has for peace negotiations unless, said Hudisteanu.
