Israel approves law on public trials, death penalty for October 7 detainees

Israel's parliament has unanimously passed legislation establishing a special military tribunal for Palestinians accused of involvement in the October 7th attacks. The new court can impose the death penalty and hold public hearings—powers human rights organisations say undermine fair trial rights. All 93 MPs present voted in favour, marking rare political consensus ahead of Israel's 2026 elections. The law applies to those suspected of involvement in the attacks or holding Israeli captives, whilst Israel continues to detain approximately 1,300 Palestinians from Gaza without charge.
