Cannes film festival spotlights childhood, conflict and survival stories

Two deeply personal films premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, telling stories of childhood shaped by war, displacement and survival. “Duera,” set in Kosovo during the late 1990s, follows a 13-year-old girl navigating adolescence as conflict with Serbia looms. Director Blerta Basholli says the film reflects her own experiences growing up during uncertainty and focuses on the innocence of youth rather than politics. Another film, “Congo Boy,” tells the story of a teenage refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo living through conflict in the Central African Republic. Based on director Nelson Makengo’s own life, the film explores survival, family responsibility and the hope young refugees carry despite war. Both films premiered at the Cannes Film Festival as filmmakers used cinema to highlight the human cost of conflict and the fragility of childhood.
