Japan and Taiwan grow closer as concerns over China's regional influence rise

31/05/2026-15:56 31/05/2026-16:05 חדשות قناة Al Jazeera דיווח

Japan and Taiwan have grown closer politically and strategically in recent years, driven by shared concerns over China's expanding regional influence. The relationship is visible in Taiwan's enthusiastic support for Japan's tourism sector, which has seen a sharp drop in visitors from mainland China. Japan's increased military spending and the hawkish stance of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi have reinforced the two neighbours' roles as a counterweight to Chinese influence in the East China Sea and the Pacific. Growing uncertainty over US reliability in any future confrontation with China has further deepened their interdependence. Al Jazeera's Rob McBride reports from Taipei, Taiwan.
