We recently asked you to submit questions about the war in Sudan, which has left more than 30 million people in need of humanitarian assistance, and entered its fourth year but rarely makes headlines. Guardian journalist Kaamil Ahmed, who has spent months reporting on the conflict and speaking to some of those displaced, breaks down what is happening in the country and why it has escalated to catastrophic proportions since 2023. The reasons are complex, but one key factor is the UAE’s role in the devastating conflict. It has frequently been accused of fuelling the Sudan war by secretly supplying weapons to Sudanese paramilitaries or by training and deploying Colombian mercenaries to support the Rapid Support Forces.
