Nepal's flood recovery could cost up to $5bn, nearly a tenth of GDP

As the scale of Nepal's flood disaster becomes clearer, attention is turning to who will pay for the damage. Nearly all of Nepal's electricity comes from hydropower, generated at more than 200 facilities. At least 12 of them, spread across two river basins, were damaged in the floods, wiping out more than 10 percent of the country's generation capacity and affecting both domestic supply and the roughly $200 million a year Nepal earns from electricity exports. The glaciers that once gave Nepal its hydropower advantage are becoming a growing liability, as high-altitude regions of the Himalayas warm nearly 50 percent faster than the global average. Nepal accounts for just 0.1 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, yet is paying a disproportionately heavy price, while China, the US and India remain the world's largest emitters.
